Is it worth it for the shoe to fit?

I read the article "Emily's Scars" and felt it was very interesting but at times confusing especially when he talked about "fields" and "capital" . The author, Arthur W. Frank mainly talks about Surgically Shaping Children or SSC which are surgeries like limb lengthening for children with dwarfism or surgically fixing facial deformities. He also talks about "modern surgery" and how it isn't just for reducing pain anymore its used to completely change our bodies so we can look the way we want to. A part I found interesting in this article is when he talks about a podiatrist in New York City who surgically alters women's feet to fit designer shoes. I thought that this was ridiculous that people would pay money to make their feet fit in to a pair of shoes.

I feel that cosmetic surgery is not a good thing. I think people should be happy with the way they are. This sounds so cliche but everyone has things they are insecure about, you just have to learn to embrace them. Using surgery to fix every little thing you don't like about yourself is just ridiculous. I feel that plastic surgery is useful for people who have major facial deformities like cleft palates but when people just do it to have a "better nose" or a to have "beautiful feet to fit designer shoes" it is definitely not necessary and not worth the time and money. I don't like how today's society is so based on appearance and how people feel they need to surgically alter themselves to boost their confidence level or feel adequate about themselves, but I guess that is the society we now live in and it won't be changing.

  1. Isn't it the sad, sad truth? I agree with you most wholeheartedly--that people should just let themselves be and leave their bodies alone! I mean, unless the surgery is necessary for a potentially debilitating ailment, or to reduce any health problems, it's simply not necessary to go changing ourselves if what we have right now proves sufficient and healthy and able. I mean, we've got people going so far into the process of changing themselves that they eventually end up destroying themselves as a result! (see: http://celebgalz.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/487.jpg) It's simply disturbing. And to think she's spent nearly $4 million on those surgeries.

  2. I definately second that oppinion. Too many people are striving to reach a perfection that doesn't exist. There are so many people out there that have actual deformities, and these obsessive people are so worried about a bump on their nose or having small lips. It doesn't make sense to me. If you're not already secure with your inner being, there isn't any possible change on the physical level that will compensate for this insecurity. I think it has a lot to do with having an obsessive personality and maintaining a certain control. These perfectionists aren't necessarily in control of certain aspects of their lives, so in order to obtain this satisfaction, they proceed to strictly focus on their physical attritubes because with the help of plastic surgery, they are able to "control" how beautiful, thin, or desirable they are. But in reality, if one is secure and accepting of their self, then what's on the outside shouldn't dictate how they feel on the inside.
